The design of the organizational structure of the maintenance department depends on several factors, including the size and type of the facility and the management style of the facility in general. Organizational structures can be categorized into four models:
- Hierarchical organization.
- Organizing effectively.
- Organization by projects.
- Matrix organization.
First, Types of organizational structures
Central organizational:
The figure shows the central organizational structure of maintenance management, and this type is one of the most used types of organizational structures for maintenance management in facilities.
Benefits of using centralized organization of maintenance management:
- Low maintenance cost.
- Take advantage of the resources available in maintenance.
Disadvantages of using centralized organization of maintenance management:
- Focusing on the maintenance task, making it a goal in itself.
- Create difficulties between production and maintenance.
- The length of the communication path between production and maintenance.
Second, Decentralized organization:
One of the most important characteristics of this organization is that the maintenance formations are distributed according to the production departments, for example (the maintenance officer of Department A, the maintenance officer of Department B … etc.).
Benefits of a decentralized organization:
- Maintenance aims to serve production more than if it were centralized.
- Optimum use of the available time due to reduced initialization and repair time due to the presence of maintenance totals with production.
Disadvantages of decentralized organization:
- The possibility of neglecting maintenance activities at the expense of production.
- High volume of maintenance resources.
- Inflexibility in the use of maintenance resources.
- Lack of skills of maintenance workers.
Third, Matrix organization:
This structure contains a centralized and decentralized organization and responsibilities divided, so that the production official is appointed to be responsible for all maintenance activities and shares responsibility with the mechanical engineer responsible for mechanical maintenance, as well as share the responsibility with the electrical engineer responsible for electrical maintenance.
Benefits of matrix organization:
- This organization combined the benefits of centralized and decentralized organization.
Disadvantages of matrix organization:
- Sharing responsibilities causes great difficulties in implementation.
- The possibility of an increase in differences between the maintenance department and the production department, which negatively affects the performance of employees.
